Singapore Zoological Gardens

The Zoo Map Upon Entrance

3 weeks ago, I was at the Singapore Zoological Gardens. I realised that I had yet to post the pictures though I had quite a few pictures on my previous trips in 2006. There were none in this blog since they were posted in multiply. So this time, fresh new zoo pictures since I couldn't be bothered to copy them out from my extermal hd. I didn't really take many pictures of the animals since I had taken quite alot in my previous trips. The ones i took the recent weeks were mainly still exhibits and signages, which I found interesting.

This is the where the Zoo Trams stops to pick up the visitors. There are several Tram stops in the zoo. Each ride has a short commentary and stops for alighting so that you won't find yourself too tired. But normally I prefer not to take the trams because you will miss alot of animal exhibits, well unless you've seen them before or are the type who plan just to sit on the tram only and too lazy for the walk!

This sculpture caught my eye. I think it had been there for years? But this time I was not looking at the animals so i found this tied to the beams, near the souvenior shop near the entrance.

What can I say, the Zoo Loo has always been fascinating to me! They were the first few loos in Singapore that had themes for at least ten over years before shopping centres started to mimick them.

That's all for this post. I shan't make this too lengthy so that it is easier to digest. Shall post up more pics in few separate posts.

Just One Drink??

Look at this picture. Don't you think it is funny? A friend of mine sent it to me quite some time ago. I wonder if this was exagarated to promote a Just One Drink campaign? It it was, then i think the result would have been hilarious! I guess it's not about Just One Drink but Better Don't Even Start! Look at the size of those cups! I wonder where and how did they manage to get that. It prob can't be made like the real disposable cup, unless the thickness is fairly thick. Otherwise it would be quite flimsy to the hold. If it was a thicker pvc or acrylic, maybe...

All in all, hope you had a good laugh at this! I sure did. :)

But not Cingular. Select the right one that your cell phone supports and you are on the way for the hippiest, trendiest ringtones from Cingular's library.

Check out other features like its attractive prepaid plans, of various mobile plans that don't expire for a whole year! Amusement games

My girls like to go to the amusement centres. They usually like to try the "UFO Catcher' but unfortunately those are very difficult for them. The grip is usually loose and you need to really get a good angle and grip so the toys doesn't slip off.

We really spend alot on these because the girls pester daddy and myself to get the soft toys. Other than the UFO Catcher, we go for the Confectionary UFO where you scoop the confectionary to drop on the mobile sections and the sweets would then be pushed down as your rewards. Every swipe or play is S$1 so if you play up to S$10 you get alot of sweets and stuff at the end of it. Rae loves to play on the drums and table hockey.

Check out some experts at the UFO catcher. Might pick up some tips or two here.

Left Brain versus Right Brain

I discovered this while blog-hopping the other day. Yvonne of etceteramommy placed this on her blog. I found it interesting and it confirmed my preference for all things visual...hahaha.

Frederik Magle - Beautiful masterpieces

I was exposed to Classical Music when I was very young because my neighbour was a Piano teacher. She is on the piano in the early hours in the morning and sometimes plays very beautiful pieces in the evening. It had a soothing effect on me, which acts as an anti stress method for me to tune in to classical music when I am stressed. I grew up listening to her pieces and students' recitals for as long as 16 years. She left quite an impression on me and left me searching for familiar piano tunes on cds when I left home for further education.

Recently I found this website which contain full works of composer Frederik Magle. In order to listen to his masterpieces, I registered in his website and downloaded and listened to his several beautiful works of art. One was The Hope. If you are a movie buff, you might agree with me that it is a beautiful piece, intense yet moving. It displays an expression of anxiety building up and met by the inspiring beautiful sounds of choir.

The other piece that I heard was Cantelina. This one actually reminded me a little of Lord of the Rings. It also reminded me of some folk music of Scottish or the region. It sounded very enchanting and brings me into the world of dreams and fairy tales. I really love this one. It has this 'And they lived happily ever after' notion.

You have to listen to Frederik Magle's pieces to really feel it. There is so much depth and emotion in his pieces. His music downloads are also available in 128kbps and high quality 320kbps mp3 formats.

Lazy pair of artist's hands

Rae is attracted to Arts and Crafts.

But she is not very hardworking at it. She wants fast results and will colour, paint with haste. I've taught her some tricks about colouring and about colours. She would leave lots of whites in her colouring because she has a pair of lazy hands..

I shan't use the general word on her totally because her eyes works hard on the tv, her mouth is attracted to Junk food and she has flexible ears that twitches. Not sure where she got it from. And she has a mouth that can blab for hours. BUT she does have lazy hands.

Lately, she's drawn to animal drawings alot. She simply loves to draw cats. This is one of her school project to be pasted on her school art folder. She did a good job actually, with nice bright colours. I hope she will continue to do better in Art in future. Despite her favourite subject, she scored the worst in her report book last year for her final semestral exam, a B for Art. Because she says, she gets tired after all that colouring so she mostly leave them white or incomplete colouring. Yeah.. LAZY HANDS!

Who is he? I mean Ah Du or Ah Gu

I was in Jurong Point on the 6th January recently. The mall was terribly crowded. Aaahh.. must be the Chinese New Year that's prompting everyone to shop, shop, shop like there's no tomorrow!

Well we tried to walk where there's less people so to the top floor we were. But there was crowd everywhere. It turned out, there was a 'singer' who was present on that day. It was a mini concert. The railings were all lined with people that I just had to take a tiny peek through. Well since I didn't listen to chinese songs, I only know someone said it was 'Ah Gu' (or Ah Du) or spelled Agu/Adu (???) who was on stage. Who is he? Pardon my ignorance but I really have no idea. Is he a Malaysian, Singaporean, Taiwanese or Indonesian? Why is his name such? As in Cow/Pig? Any ideas?

Great Discovery for Prescription Glasses Online

Going to get a pair of prescription glasses is not cheap. I made a pair many years ago and had wanted to make a second pair for a while. Since I don't really depend on it, I didn't make the trip to the shop for my second pair. The ones at the shop are very costly. Most of them require some other miscellaneous charge.

Great Discovry: $ 8 Prescription Glasses From Zenni Optical

How do they make these glasses at such a low price, you must be wondering. Well, the trick is, they have almost no advertising budget. You don't go through them like in a middlemen as their frames are manufactured direct to the customer.

Choose from a wide variety of frames, designs, and lenses. They even have goggles if you are looking for one for your swimming workout.

Left is Right

I found this online. I thought it is COOL. I'd like to give this to Nancy, our new Blogger, who - incidentally is like me, a Leftie. I was born into a family of Woman lefties, Mum, Aunt, Sis, Niece, Myself and my eldest daughter. The men uses their rights. Reunion dinners can be fun with all the lefts and all the rights the opposites.

For Nancy, because she is a Leftie, Libran and born in the year of Monkey, has two kids, has two prominent moles, pint sized, bitch and moan about pigmentation and similar topics. We are so alike, I might be a 'clone'? So there you are. Nancy. Put this on your blog.

Mightier than the Sword, Mighty Savers saves the Day!

What a surprise, a PLEASANT surprise, when I got back from lunch today. Well, I just had to do this, blog about it.

I came back, saw this man just at my doorstep with a registered letter. Aah, probably registered documents for Ah Boy. Sofiyah told me its a delivery from OCBC. This soft spoken man asked me to sign on the form, and said he delivered something. My maid said it was some parcel, I glanced in, saw 2 packs of stuff and saw some cartoon icons in bright red that looked familiar.. Oh! Those are Mighty Savers Stuff. I thought hard. Then, said to the man, I didn't realise this is coming because when I signed up my girls, I didn't read anything like that to be delivered to me. He smiled and muttered something like maybe I was their priviledged customer... I brushed it off because we have accounts with OCBC, but we aren't rich or had a gold mines under their care..

Lea, on the other hand was already busying herself with the package while I went on to open the letter that came with the courier form. I asked Sofiya and Lea not to tear it in case it's not for us and is sent to the wrong address. When I read it, I was just totally SPEECHLESS! Oh WOW!

Nicholas Tan, who heads the Group Wealth Management of OCBC just sent me a letter after reading my blog. YES! He READ MY BLOG! Is he a Blogger as well? Otherwise, how on earth did he find my blog. Had he been doing a search as part of his effort to improve sales, reviews about OCBC? Well, if he did, then I can honestly say, he, and his team did an excellent job because heartlanders and bloggers like us, are your customers after all. And we do bitch and moan about everyday things like errmmm... when things don't go our way.. hahaha *blushing with embarrasment.

Not only did he apologized for what happened during one of my visits to OCBC Bank, he also threw in a Mighty Savers Hamper for Rae and Lea to make up for their disappointment. Lea was home when the gifts came and she was just delighted! She screamed Mandy and the Mighty Savers!! Sally and Simon!! She went thru all the stuff as if she knew them all. She asked if it was because she saved a few dollars recently.

I would like to thank Nicholas Tan for the gifts he put together for Rae and Lea. You have done OCBC proud for the effort, excellent service and sales recovery. You'll be seeing more visits from Rae and Lea anyway because they are already halfway through their Mighty Savers' savings cards. But with the busy banking due to Chinese New Year season, the kids will have to wait.

P/S: Oh, and Yes, I shall email him a thank you note as well.

Following this, a feature story was done about this story.. READ HERE

Red undies, anyone?

On Chinese New Year's Day, we are not suppose to wash our hair because it would mean we would have washed away good luck for the New Year. Give it a good shampoo at the eve so you won't have to bother about having a bad hair day on the first day of Chinese New Year. Bad hair days just spoils our mood, mine especially.

Everyone should refrain from using foul language and bad or unlucky words. Negative terms and the word "four" (Sey, Si), which sounds like the word for death, are not to be uttered. Death and dying are never mentioned and ghost stories are totally taboo.

Red clothing is preferred during this festive occasion. Red is considered a bright, happy color, sure to bring the wearer a sunny and bright future, not to forget good luck and weath. It is believed that appearance and attitude during New Year's sets the tone for the rest of the year. Children and unmarried friends, as well as close relatives are given lai see, little red envelopes with crisp new notes inserted, for good fortune.

So have you prepared for the Chinese New Year? Anyone who has bought red undies? I heard that it is good luck to wear red undies. No wonder one tends to see so many on sale in the recent years. I am hunting for mine, lol...

Ang Pows are meant to be lucky, so its best to feel happy when you are giving it out. The Ang Pows given out will be returned few folds more. Think happy, be happy.

Secure your home

Keeping the family safe from harm is always at the back of my mind. Lately there has been many cases of robbery and theft. Although generally our neighbourhood is safe, we should never let our guards down. The gates, windows and even the apartment garbage chute are openings that are still permissable to break-in. Thefts can be smarter than you think. They have tools for almost every type of locks or even master keys. That is why some robbery do not even show signs of break-ins.

A good Home Security system should be the basis of every home, be it an apartment, or landed house. What kind of security system is available in the market now? Most people would think of alarms. But actually there are more ways, one can fool-proof their homes from theft. It always starts from inside our homes, like keeping valuable possesions out of prying eyes, and build a good network of neighbours that you trust to keep an eye among yourselves.

With the Lunar New Year coming up, it is time to keep a closer watch on your family home. Keeping your doors open for the Fortune God's arrival is auspiscious to Chinese New Year but monitor your home closely.

Crummy Weather

The weather is crummy lately. It is raining a lot more that previous January. Is it because of Global Warming? Or El Nino? La Nina? What other names of our erratic weather is there? January used to be terribly hot. Especially the Chinese New Year period. Now our weather is changing, I saw Durians on sale the past few weeks! Pretty weird. We used to get Durians in Junes.

Gurmit Singh Shaves All

There is this shot i took during the countdown of New Year's Day recently. It was actually a live show playing on the television. There was the usual singing before the countdown.

The comperes for the show had Gurmit in it. I think most Malaysians and Singaporeans would be able to recognised Gurmit Singh since he also acted in the popular Phua Chu Kang sitcom comedy on TV besides lots of other shows in Singapore. I just had to take this because he sported a Bald look tat night. I haven't updated myself with any of the current issues on the local stars for a while since I was busy blogging and chatting away on skype and msn.

So before these pictures become history, here it is. Look at Botak Gurmit..

My Trusty Old Handphone

It was a day of fun and sun, today being Sunday. We were going to the Singapore Zoological Gardens. We've been there quite a few times, but somehow we don't cover the whole zoo because it is a big place. And when you have children, they get tired easily. We'd usually take leisurely walks and turn a different route with every visit. After all the family goes for free being Friends of the Zoo member. If you apply for it, it is unlimited numbers of visits. Carpark is free too.

Wanted to be early actually. Ah Boy said we should be leaving the house as early as 7am...Yawn. Well, it wasn't easy to get everyone ready, especially Ah Boy himself. I was up by 7am, an hour later than most mornings but the rest were still asleep. So I just took my time doing my own stuff and taking my shower. About 8am only did they started to get animated. So I went to pack the stuff like some change of clothes just in case the girls wants to play in the Kids' area and Playground. We took off finally about 9.30pm but headed to Jurong, instead. I just had to do something... to pick up my handphone! Reaching there, we had breakfast at the coffeeshop nearby because the shop wasn't opened yet. We asked the tenant next door and she said they usually opened about 11am. Gosh! What a long wait!

We just walked around and did some browzing in the estate. At 11am, I was just so excited and went on to collect my mobile!! Yippeee! Hurrayyy! I finally got my trusty old mobile, How I missed it terribly! I didn't bring my external memory card with me but I had my temp Nokia with me to try on the sim card. It was alright. I still have my phone nos intact because they were in the sim memory anyway. And my pictures and recently taken shots should still be safe in my external memory card at home...

So, it was a happy day for me. Zoo was alright, I could test my mobile on lots of shots but not too many since I was using the internal memory. Zoo pics will be posted soon, together with other posts with pics from my external memory card.

Old Tin Toys

I remembered in the early years when I was young, I used to play with hand-me-down toys from my sis or cousins.

My cousins have crates and crates of toys and they were a good 4 to 10 years older than me. Visiting them was a happy time. I'd go through their toy box like looking for treasures, and every find inside were just delightful.

The kind of toys in those times were so different from now. These days, we have lots of realistic toys, toys for gross motor skills and remote control ones. The toys in the olden days were either DIY or tin toys.

An old colleague of mine is a collector of antique tin toys. Check out these tin toys i found on the internet. These are the common ones that I remembered playing with, growing up.
